Pike Fishing in Autumn: Best Time for Big Predatory Fish

Autumn is the season when pike anglers perk up. As soon as the temperatures drop, predators switch into feeding mode. Every bite could now be a trophy fish. The fish know winter is approaching, and they fill their energy reserves by aggressively going after prey. That is exactly why the saying goes: autumn is pike season. If you're ready to go after big pike during this peak season, all you need is the right setup.

When does pike bite in autumn?

In autumn, pike behavior changes fundamentally. As the water temperatures drop, their feeding frenzy begins, because they need to build up energy reserves for winter. This biological drive makes the predators especially aggressive and is therefore perfect for us anglers.

The best times to catch pike at a glance

  • Morning: At dawn, pike move close to shore to actively hunt baitfish.

  • Midday: If the sun shines on the water between 11 and 15 o'clock, shallow areas warm up – a magnet for baitfish and therefore also for pike.

  • Evening: At dusk, the predators start a second round of hunting, often even more aggressively than in the morning.

While in early autumn many bites happen in shallow water, pike increasingly move into deeper areas as the water gets colder. So anyone who fishes flexibly between shallow and deep water boosts their chances enormously.

Holding spots – Where do pike stay in autumn?

Pike are opportunists. They stay where their prey fish are. In autumn, they follow schools of roach, bream, or perch like wolves chasing a pack of deer. Find the prey, and you find the predator too.

Classic autumn spots for pike

  • Edges: Transitions from shallow to deep are true hotspots because baitfish gather there.

  • Weed beds: Pike lie in wait at the edge of dense vegetation and launch lightning-fast attacks.

  • Sunken trees & rock piles: Perfect hiding places from which they ambush their prey.

  • Harbour edges: A real insider tip, especially in late autumn, when baitfish are seeking shelter.

Many anglers underestimate Google Maps. Satellite images help you spot edges and structures and are ideal when you're fishing from the bank. That way, you'll find spots where the big pike gather.

The best lures in autumn

When the days get shorter, pike go for energy-rich meals. That means one thing for us anglers: larger lures bring more success. In autumn, soft lures between 15–20 cm are standard because they give predators exactly what they want: lots of energy in one bite.

Especially effective are action shads with a large paddle tail, which send strong pressure waves through the water. In clear water, natural colours work well, while in murky water or at dusk shock colours and UV-active models are unbeatable.

In addition to shads, you should also use crankbaits, jerkbaits, and spinnerbaits to stay flexible and react to different conditions. It's worth taking a look at the pike lure category to land trophy pike for sure!

Rigs & techniques

As effective as these lures are in autumn, without the right rig you're wasting opportunities. A strong leader is especially important, because pike teeth act like razor blades. So use at least 1 mm thick fluorocarbon, which stays almost invisible underwater and provides reliable protection.

The most common setup in autumn is the jig head rig. With it, you can present large shads like the SEMO perfectly. Our Jig Set is based exactly on this rig – simple, but extremely effective for aggressive predators.

Retrieve styles that work in autumn:

  • Jigging: The classic – let the lure hop along the bottom.

  • Twitching: Imitate nervous movement with short rod jerks.

  • Steady retrieve: Even retrieve, unbeatable especially in late autumn.

Pike fishing through the day & season

For pike anglers, autumn is divided into three phases. Each has its own hotspots and lure strategies.

Early autumn (September)

  • Water temperature still warm → pike often hold in the midwater

  • They follow schools of small fish

  • Strategy: vary your retrieve, present shads in midwater

October – feeding frenzy

  • Pike build up reserves for winter

  • Spots: shallow bays, weed beds, bank edges

  • Strategy: large shads (15–20 cm), jerkbaits, aggressive retrieve

Late autumn (November)

  • Falling temperatures → pike move into deep water

  • Behavior becomes more sluggish

  • Strategy: slower retrieve, longer pauses, present lures deeper

Times of day for pike fishing at a glance:

  • Dawn: active pike near the shore

  • Midday (11–15 Uhr): especially good when it's sunny

  • Dusk: a second, often very strong feeding window

Common mistakes when pike fishing in autumn

Many anglers miss out on chances because they make typical mistakes.

Lures that are too small

  • Big pike ignore mini baits → use lures 15–20 cm long

No adjustment to conditions

  • Clear water = natural colours

  • Murky water or dusk = shock colours & UV

Wrong leader

  • Thin line isn't enough → use 1 mm fluorocarbon, invisible & bite-resistant

Retrieving too fast in cold water

  • Frantic steady retrieve puts fish off

  • Better: slow, controlled retrieve with pauses
