When the days get shorter, pike go for energy-rich meals. That means one thing for us anglers: larger lures bring more success. In autumn, soft lures between 15–20 cm are standard because they give predators exactly what they want: lots of energy in one bite.

Especially effective are action shads with a large paddle tail, which send strong pressure waves through the water. In clear water, natural colours work well, while in murky water or at dusk shock colours and UV-active models are unbeatable.

As effective as these lures are in autumn, without the right rig you're wasting opportunities. A strong leader is especially important, because pike teeth act like razor blades. So use at least 1 mm thick fluorocarbon, which stays almost invisible underwater and provides reliable protection.
