Pike Fishing: Seasons, Baits & Techniques

Pike don't always bite. But anyone who fishes the right spot at the right time with the right setup gets rewarded. The thing is, many people do it wrong. Wrong lure, wrong depth, wrong timing. No wonder the pike just looks on tiredly.

In this guide, I'll show you how to deliberately increase your catch rate, whether in spring, summer, autumn, or winter. From the right rig to the proper lure presentation and the perfect spot. Keep reading and find your setup for every season.

Spring – When pike become active again

In spring, the game starts all over again. The closed season is over, and pike leave their winter rest and move into shallower water. The water slowly warms up, nature gets moving – and so does the pike. But if you think you can just start casting blindly now, you're wrong.

How pike behave in spring

After spawning, the predators are still a bit sluggish at first. Even so, they take advantage of the increasing food supply and actively search for baitfish. Smaller whitefish, in particular, now gather where the water warms up quickly. Those spots are your chance.

  • Shallow zones with weed growth
  • Structure-rich banks (logs, groynes, jetties)
  • Quiet bays, sheltered areas
  • Transitions from shallow to mid-water

The pike is an ambush predator. It doesn't wait in open water, but uses cover and structure. If you place your lure where the pike is holding, you're in the best position.

Lures & techniques that catch now

Not every pike lure works equally well in spring. The predators are hungry, but not yet at peak form. Too frantic lure action or overly bright triggers can scare them off more than attract them.

  • Soft plastic lures in natural colours
  • Softbaits, which can be worked slowly
  • Jerkbaits, when you're targeting structure specifically
  • Spinners, to create visual attraction

PIKE FISHING IN SPRING – SPOTS, LURES & TECHNIQUES

Summer – Use active phases, sound out depths

Pike fishing in summer can be frustrating. Why? Quite simply: the fish aren't always where you expect them to be – and they're by no means always hungry. Especially during the hot period around July and August, there are only short feeding windows, usually early in the morning or late in the evening. If you use those, you have the best chance.

How pike behave in summer:

In midsummer, the pike's metabolism slows down. The warm water makes them lethargic; they move deeper or hide in the shade.

  • Reed edges with a transition to deeper water
  • Lily pad beds – cover and oxygen here
  • Drop-offs – where the water suddenly falls away
  • Deeper channels or cooler, oxygen-rich zones
Tip: Watch the water temperature. If it rises above 23 degrees, it gets difficult. Then it's better to go out early or later in the day.

Pike lures that work in summer

Pike are pickier in summer. Large, bulky lures often don't do much. Slim, subtle models look more natural and also trigger bites during short feeding spells.

  • Slim wobblers – ideal for mid-water
  • Soft jerks – often produce bites in shallow areas
  • Topwater lures – especially effective at sunrise and sunset

Especially at dusk, a cleanly worked topwater lure can make the water erupt. It hardly gets more exciting than that.

Technique matters: finesse and spin fishing

If you just crank through the water aimlessly, you'll rarely be successful. In summer, precise fishing is needed.

  1. Finesse fishing in mid-water – let the lure sink slowly, give short twitches, let it sink again.
  2. Targeted spin fishing along reed edges and drop-off structures.

"Not frantic. The pike doesn't want a wild chase, just an easy snack."

Autumn – Feeding frenzy before winter

Autumn is your best time if you want to target trophy pike. Now every calorie counts. The predators know exactly what's coming: cold water, little prey, long stretches without food.

In autumn, pike switch into feeding mode.

What works now:

Big fish don't waste time thinking. If they want to get full, they go for the big bite. So you should choose your lures accordingly.

  • Swimbaits in XL sizes
  • Large soft plastics with a full body
  • Baitfish systems for targeted bottom fishing

"Big lure = big pike"

Technique makes the difference

In autumn, you can fish a bit more aggressively. Active retrieves, changes in speed, and provocative movements often produce the sought-after strike. The pike doesn't spend long thinking now.

Slow but powerful retrieval with a swimbait.
Jigging with large lures in depths of 3–6 meters.
Working specific holding spots, e.g. g. edges, deep holes, transitions.

Important: the rigs should now be built robustly.
Steel leader is mandatory.
A larger hook size saves you trouble on the strike.

Pike fishing in winter

Many anglers pack away their rods in winter. A mistake. If you know how pike tick now, you can still catch them deliberately in December, January, and February.

How pike behave in winter:

Cold temperatures slow down the metabolism. The pike holds deep, is sluggish, but not lazy. It saves energy, hunts rarely – but when it does, it does so efficiently. That's why you need to present your lure exactly where the fish is holding.

✔ Deep holes and hollows
✔ Quiet areas without current
✔ Harbour entrances, gravel pits, old river arms

Pike usually hold right on the bottom. Your lure should too.

Pike lures for freezing days

In winter, you don't need much experimentation. Two variants have proven themselves:

  1. Large soft plastics with little action, worked close to the bottom

  2. Baitfish on a rig, presented calmly and slowly

High-contrast colours often help: Firetiger, Chartreuse or classic red-black make it easier for the pike to locate the bite-sized prey.

Techniques for winter pike

As slowly as possible is the motto here. The lure may even seem almost boring. That's exactly what gets bites.

Proven methods in winter:

✔ Very slow jigging – minimal hops, long pauses
✔ Vertical fishing – directly from the boat or jetty, deep, precise
✔ Dead baitfish on the bottom – classic, effective, reliable

The right rig for pike fishing

If you want to fish for pike successfully, you can't avoid the topic of rigs. The right presentation of your lure often decides whether the pike strikes or simply moves on. Especially because pike can be wary predators, you should know which pike fishing rigs make the difference in which situation.

When pike fishing, a steel leader is mandatory. Whether you're using a soft plastic, baitfish, or hardbait. A pike's sharp teeth will cut through normal line in a fraction of a second.

Swimbait ★★ ★★★★ ★★★★★ ★★★★
Spinnerbait ★★ ★★★ ★★★★★ ★★★
Chatterbait ★★ ★★★ ★★★★ ★★★
Softbait ★★★ ★★★★★ ★★★★★ ★★★★

These rigs have proven themselves in pike fishing

  1. Float rig with baitfish
The classic option for still waters or slowly flowing waters. Here, a dead baitfish is presented under a float, usually near the bottom. Ideal if you want to coax a pike into biting over the course of hours. This pike fishing rig is especially suitable in winter or on low-activity days.

  2. Shallow rig
Perfect for shallow, weed-heavy areas. The baitfish is presented on a special rig near the surface or in mid-water. Often used when fishing over weed beds or shallow bays.

  3. Bottom rig with steel leader
A true classic when pike fishing with baitfish. The dead fish lies on the bottom, and the lead keeps it in position. Especially effective in deep holes or in turbid conditions. This rig stays simple, but is extremely effective.

  4. Jig head rig with soft plastic
Essential when you're actively targeting pike. A soft plastic on a jig head lets you fish precisely over edges, plateaus, and in mid-water. With jigging, you can react flexibly to depth, structure, and predator behaviour. The perfect rig for pike fishing, if you like to stay mobile.

  5. Offset hook on a Texas rig (in weeds)
Especially in summer, when pike are holding deep in the weeds, you need a weed-friendly rig. The Texas rig with an offset hook protects the lure from snagging. A softbait can then be worked cleanly through the vegetation – right in front of the predator's mouth.

Pike fishing gear

Especially when fishing for pike, a good pike rod makes all the difference. The combination of a powerful rod, a reliable reel, abrasion-resistant line, and the right rig gets you there. Especially for jigging, it pays to use matched sets. With the JAEGER Jig Set for Pike & Perch, you're well prepared for many situations.

Pike fishing for beginners – What you really need

Many people make the same mistake when starting out: too complicated, too much, too expensive. But pike fishing for beginners isn't that hard. With the right setup, you'll be on the safe side from day one – and save yourself expensive lessons. You don't need pro equipment. But you do need gear that suits you, your water, and the pike.

Rod, reel, line – What really matters

When pike fishing for beginners, you should go with a robust, reliable setup. Pike are powerful predators, so a delicate trout rod won't do you much good.

✔ A rod with backbone, casting weight 40–80 g (suitable for larger lures)
✔ A sturdy spinning reel, size 3000 to 4000
✔ Braided line with at least 0.18–0.22 mm diameter (approx. 10–12 kg breaking strain)
✔ Always a steel leader – mandatory when pike fishing

Pike fishing for beginners vs. advanced anglers

Beginner setup
✔ All-round combo for soft plastics, wobblers, spinners
✔ Versatile use, not too stiff, but powerful enough
✔ Forgiving, durable

Advanced
✔ More specialisation (e.g. jigging, jerking, trolling)
✔ More fine-tuned depending on technique
✔ Higher sensitivity, more precision

Tip: Go for an all-round combo with enough backbone. That covers almost everything from bottom fishing and spin fishing to classic pike rigs.

FAQs about pike fishing

When do pike bite best?

In spring and autumn, the chances are highest. Pike usually bite better in the morning and evening than at midday.

What is the best lure for pike?

Soft plastic lures are considered the all-rounder. Depending on the season, wobblers, spinners, or baitfish also work very well.

How deep should you fish for pike?

Often shallower in summer, much deeper in winter. Always base it on temperature, structure, and time of day.

Do I need a steel leader?

Yes, a steel leader is mandatory when pike fishing. Without one, you risk line breakage from the pike's sharp teeth.

What's better, artificial lure or baitfish?

Both catch fish. Artificial lures are more flexible for active techniques, while baitfish performs well for calm, targeted fishing.
